We travel a lot, so we rely on our trusted friends in studios across the country to give us killer audio samples using Monheim Microphones. Here are some of our choice microphone samples.
Dave Way (Waystation Studio)
Los Angeles, CA
A humble legend in the industry, Dave Way offers this sample of drums tracked using our Omni SPL mics in Glyn Johns mic technique. There is only one additional microphone on the kick drum - a vintage AKG D20.
This sample is recorded and mixed with mild compression and reverb at Dave's home studio, Waystation.
Alan Leggett Engineer/Producer
Recorded live and mixed at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences, engineer/producer Alan Leggett utilizes the Monheim Omnis in "spaced pair" technique to capture the
unique tonality and dynamics of the Tabla drums.
Percussion player, Timothy O'Brien plays the Tablas in this performance.
Alicia Blue (Monheim Studio)
Recorded at our studio in Hollywood, Alicia stopped by to sample the FET microphone for her vocal. Guitar and Vocals were tracked together in one take. Track 1 is Vocal ONLY with the FET microphone. Track 2 is the FET on vocal and Omni on guitar.
The Omni is placed on her guitar about 6-8 inches away, and the FET on her vocal about 6-8 inches away. No EQ or compression. Monheim Channel Strip preamp on both microphones.
Alicia's methodical writing and extraordinary cadence make her one of the most exciting new up and coming artists to look out for. We were honored to have her share her new song with us on the site, please enjoy.
Lior Goldenberg Studio
Woodland Hills, CA
Recorded in his adapted and highly customized home studio, Lior provides us some great drum samples using the Monheim SPL Omnis. You can hear the kit expertly tracked with the Omnis soloed, with Omnis and kick, snare, and with the full kit.
Lior's extensive career has included such artists as Ziggy Marley, Allen Stone, Vanessa Carlton, and Andrew W.K. and his unique sonic signature is sought after within the Indie scene.
Scott Frankfurt Studio
Woodland Hills, CA
Tucked away in his home in Woodland Hills, Scott Frankfurt has one of the most impressive home conversion studios in the LA area. He prides himself on capturing great music and providing the artist with an unparalleled "at home" experience.
Jackson Singleton joined us for this session and we tracked the entire sample using only a Matched pair of Monheim Omnis to capture Jackson's incredible singing and playing. One take!
Jaime Jimenez (Private Studio)
Jaime (JJ) from the band Cronos, tracked Rey Y Unico Senor at his private studio in Houston, TX area and used Monheim Omni Microphones on the Acoustic Guitars. Jaime is a huge fan of the Omnis and of the Monheim Mics approach to changing the price gap and improving quality for engineers, musicians, and producers.
Session Notes: This is a Rough Mix (faders/levels up) from the tracking session with NO EQ or Effects during tracking or on mix.
Tucked away in the unassuming neighborhood just north of University of Nevada, Reno, sits Dogwater Studios--the perfect mix of punk rock approach and professionalism. Take a listen to the detailed drum tracks Dogwater Dick was able to capture using the Monheim Omni, then head over to The Worst Little Podcast in the World and see if you can hear the Omni in action!
Session Notes: Omnis mixed with his close mics on full-kit recording. Listen close as he moves them further away so you can hear more of the room space on Example 2
Firehouse Recording Studios
Firehouse Recording Studios is one of the premier post and tracking facilities just outside of the major Los Angeles area. We had a chance to track on a beautiful Bosendorfer piano in their well-treated live room. Exceptional room space plus great piano equals a stellar test for the Omni.
Session Notes: Their in-house engineers placed the mics in a multitude of arrangements at various distances. Recordings straight from their clean pre-amp--no EQ or compression.
A hidden gem of a studio nestled next to the base of the towering San Gabriel Mountains, AndromiDen Recordings specializes in providing professional sounding mixes to innovative, independent artists who are breaking ground in the LA music scene. Take a listen to one such artist, El Joe of the River, as he performs Rodrigo Amarante's "Tuyo" on classical guitar for a matched pair of Monheim Omnis.
Session Notes: very quiet guitar player, nylon string classical custom guitar, pres cranked, about +45 dB gain, no compression, no EQ
